Why the CLOUD Act matters to you

This US statute is the main reason choosing a US-based service exposes your personal data, even when that service advertises GDPR compliance.

☁️ CLOUD Act — Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act (2018)

Signed into law on March 23, 2018, the CLOUD Act allows US authorities — FBI, NSA, federal agencies — to compel US-based companies to hand over data stored in any country in the world, including in Europe.

In practice: if you use DeleteMe or Optery, both US companies, a US agency can legally access your data — your name, address, date of birth, email — without notifying you and without going through a European judicial procedure.

European GDPR does not shield against the CLOUD Act. These two regimes apply independently of each other. Only choosing a non-US host, outside US jurisdiction, provides real protection.

That is why Sheeldy chose Infomaniak, an independent Swiss host, not subject to the CLOUD Act and ISO 27001 certified.

Your rights under GDPR and CCPA

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR, and California's CCPA give you strong rights over your personal data. Sheeldy exercises them on your behalf.

Art. 17
Right to erasure
Under GDPR Article 17 (and the equivalent CCPA right to delete), you can require any data controller to delete your personal data, without having to justify your request.
30d
Legal response window
Data brokers have a legal obligation to process any erasure request within 30 days of receipt under GDPR, and within 45 days under CCPA.
Art. 21
Right to object
You can object at any time to the processing of your data for profiling or direct-marketing purposes — including the "Do Not Sell My Personal Information" right under CCPA.

FAQ — Service comparison

Is DeleteMe a good choice in 2026?

DeleteMe is a US service from Abine Inc., based in Boston. It has strong coverage of US data brokers and a long track record. However, its servers are subject to the US CLOUD Act, support is English-only, and pricing sits around $10.75/month (billed yearly at about $129). For users who want EU-jurisdiction protection or a lower price, Sheeldy is a credible alternative at roughly half the cost.

Is Incogni really GDPR-compliant?

Incogni is a product of Surfshark Ltd, acquired by Nord Security in February 2022. It advertises GDPR compliance, but its headquarters are outside the core EU member states, support is primarily in English, and data hosting conditions are not publicly disclosed for European customers. Advertised GDPR compliance does not guarantee the same level of protection as an EU-native service.

What is the best French & Swiss alternative to DeleteMe?

Sheeldy is the leading French & Swiss alternative to DeleteMe. A French company with Swiss-hosted infrastructure: based in Paris, data hosted in Switzerland at Infomaniak, native GDPR and Swiss FADP compliance, English-language support, and pricing of €2.50/month (or €20/year) with no commitment — roughly four times cheaper than DeleteMe and significantly cheaper than Optery Ultimate at current exchange rates.

What is the CLOUD Act and why is it a problem?

The CLOUD Act (Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act) is a 2018 US law that allows US authorities to compel US companies to hand over data stored abroad. Using a service like DeleteMe or Optery, both US companies, means your personal data — name, address, date of birth — can be accessed by US federal agencies without you being notified.

Does Optery work in Europe?

Optery is a US service founded in San Francisco in 2021. It is primarily oriented toward US data brokers like Spokeo, Whitepages and BeenVerified. Its full plan (Ultimate) costs around $24.99/month, making it the most expensive service in this comparison. Its servers are subject to the US CLOUD Act. It is not natively designed for the European market or European data brokers.

Why is Sheeldy cheaper than its competitors?

Sheeldy was built with a deliberate bias toward maximum automation. Where DeleteMe and Incogni fund large sales teams, North American offices and venture-scale structures, Sheeldy concentrates its resources on technical automation and the experts who actually matter (lawyers, engineers). Those savings are passed directly into the price: €2.50/month (or €20/year), with no commitment.
